ÀJÒ Wellness Group

The GLEAD Program — Global Leadership, Exploration & Academic Development — is AJO's flagship cross-cultural educational experience. Designed for high school students, GLEAD blends leadership development, cultural immersion, community service, academic enrichment, and personal reflection into one transformational Africa journey.

Program at a Glance:

Program Name: GLEAD — Global Leadership, Exploration & Academic Development.

Target Students: High school sophomores & juniors (10th & 11th grade).

Destinations: South Africa (Cape Town), Ghana, or Senegal — customized to school needs.

Duration: 10-day immersive program + pre-trip orientation + post-trip integration.

Group Size: 10–15 students per cohort.

IB Relevance: Directly fulfills IB CAS requirements across all 3 strands and all 7 learning outcomes.

Certification: CCE Completion Certificate + verified service hours + leadership portfolio.

DAY 1 - Arrival & Orientation

→ Welcome dinner and AJO orientation session

→ Ubuntu philosophy introduction: 'I am because we are'

→ Journaling prompt: What do you hope to gain from this journey?

DAY 2 -Cape Town City & Historical Foundations

→ District Six Museum — guided reflection on forced removals and reconciliation

→ Slave Lodge & Castle of Good Hope — pre-colonial and colonial history

→ Woodstock street art tour — creative expression and community narrative

DAY 3 - Robben Island — History, Justice & Reconciliation

→ Full-day guided Robben Island tour — Nelson Mandela's cell, Lime Quarry

→ Facilitated reflection: connecting apartheid history to global civil rights movements

→ Evening TOK/Global Politics discussion circle

DAY 4 - Township Immersion Day


→ Guided walkabout in Langa or Khayelitsha with a trusted local guide

→ Visit to social enterprise, arts hub, and community innovation space

→ Home-hosted meal and cross-cultural dialogue with local family

DAY 5 - Service Learning Day

→ NGO partner service project (literacy, environmental, or arts-based)

→ Minimum 6–8 supervised service hours — logged and signed

→ Post-service debrief circle: privilege, reciprocity, and impact reflection

DAY 6 - Nature, Adventure & Ecology

→ Table Mountain hike or Lion's Head summit — physical challenge

→ Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens — biodiversity and conservation lesson

→ Evening leadership reflection: 'What challenges did I face today?'

DAY 7 - Food Security & Sustainability

→ Philippi Agrihub or Ujabule Urban Farm — hands-on urban agriculture

→ SDG workshop: food security, climate resilience, and local innovation

→ Group sustainability challenge — design a replicable project for a home school

DAY 8 - Arts, Culture & Creative Expression

→ African drumming, gumboot dancing, or bead-making workshop

→ Collaborative mural project with local township artists

→ Youth theatre workshop at Baxter Theatre or Artscape + evening performance

DAY 9 - Adventure & Community Celebration

→ Safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve — wildlife and conservation

→ Beach day and surfing lesson at Muizenberg (safe student beach)

→ Cultural exchange evening with the South African student group

DAY 10 -

→ Final reflection and Capstone portfolio completion

→ Capstone Showcase: student presentations, visual display, and dialogue circle

→ Certificate ceremony — CCE Completion Certificate + service hours verification

→ Group gratitude circle and farewell dinner
