Why South Africa is Great to Visit in Winter and Summer
South Africa abounds with diverse landscapes, various climates and opportunities to enjoy the indoors and outdoors all throughout the year. Don’t let the winter months between April and September put you off as many hidden wonders await those who visit during the ‘secret season’ too.
Here’s a few reasons why SA is great to visit in every season…
1. Winter is safari season
Between June and October, the bush begins to dry out become sparse with less rainfall and the animals are more visible as they seek out common waterholes and stand out amongst the sparse landscape. There’s nothing more exciting than early morning and late afternoon game drives with blankets, beanies, ponchos in hand plus the possibility of spotting wild animals doing their thing. Late afternoons in parks like the Kruger can also be quite hot even in winter, so make sure you pack for all seasons.
2. Wine and winter
Some say wine is even better in winter. Plus, with our amazing winelands with vineyards offering overnight stay options, there’s no better place to spend a cold night than beside the fire with the promise of award-winning wines and a bath.
3. Spring and Autumn love adventurers
Those who love trails, hiking and mountain biking will leave these shoulders months. Before it gets really hot in December and really cold in June, the months in between are mild often without much rain and this is great time to take to one of the mountain trails in Cape Town, the Drakensberg and also outside of Johannesburg. Always go hiking in a group and no matter the season, be sure to take a change of clothing for all seasons as mountain weather can be temperamental.
4. Summer is perfect for water-lovers.
Keen on the beach, kayaking, Suppling (stand-up paddle boarding) or just sunning yourself outdoors? Then December to March in Cape Town and along most of our coastline is the best time to visit. Bring sunblock, hats and be sure to stay covered as our sun is hot and you will be burn especially if you are not used to it.
6. Our cuisine is delicious in every season.
Come winter, many restaurants switch to more wholesome winter warmers such as soups, broths, stews and bredies. Cape Malay cuisine is a one of our better-known local cuisines and curry, butter chicken and baboetie tend to taste even better in the cold. Summer brings with it a light affair of seafood, white wines, salads etc. One thing is for sure, no-one comes to South Africa and doesn’t enjoy the food in fact it’s guaranteed to spoil your taste buds for life.
