5 Ways to Get Your Wellness On in Cape Town
Cape Town, South Africa is really one of those unique cities offering a little bit of everything to its visitors:
Natural beauty, wholesome food, many opportunities to stay active outdoors ( and indoors), arts and culture explosions as well as health and wellness hubs to keep you centered and relaxed.
It is said that there are a few dimensions of wellness-occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, physical, social, and intellectual. Each dimension is equally vital as you move towards optimum health and should be kept in mind when traveling as well as during everyday life.
Here’s a few ways to enjoy Cape Town while keeping wellness top of mind:
1. Get Active Outdoors
From hiking in the mountains ( Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, mountains of the winelands), supping and surfing in the ocean, walking/running in the forest or on Sea point’s promenade; there are so many options for you to get active outdoors. Of course our winter month’s between May- August bring lots of rain which can dampen our outdoors fun; but then our yoga/pilates studios and crossfit gyms keep us active indoors.
When in Cape Town, make sure you try your hand at kayaking in Seapoint, jogging along the promenade, joining a yoga class trailing up the mountain with/without a guide or taking a surf lesson at Muizenberg beach.
2. Do a spa day
No woman or mom in the history of the world ever declined a spa day and that’s because we all need some time out, a chance to be pampered and to have our bodies/skin rejuvenated and reenergized. Most wonderful hotels in the city centre boasts a spa of their own and then there are those luxury ones with real special views like the One and Only or the Twelve Apostles.
The Winelands regions of Constantia, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek also have inviting spa options such as Sante Wellness Spa with the added promise of wine and food pairings too.
3. Eat Well and Organic
Cape Town has exploded with organic health options of food including at restaurants and cafes. A few reasons to choose organic is Organic produce has up to 40 percent higher levels of vitamin C, zinc, iron and other key nutrients, it helps to reduce your body’s total toxic burden and
organic foods are non-GMO. Visit local markets within the city and this is where you’ll find the best in locally grown organic produce.
4. Try a new creative hobby/ Activity
They say change is like a holiday and while you may already be on holiday, try something completely new. Book an art jam session and paint to your heart’s content or best add colors to an empty canvas. Visit the Clay Cafe and mould your own cups/bowls and paint them afterwards. Who knows, you may want to pick these up when you get back to your hometown.
5. Spend the day in a garden or forest
Aside from the soothing and calming effects of the ocean, green, trees and the forest can be wonderful in relaxing you and bringing you into a good space mentally. Picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens or one of my personal favorites- visit Babylonstoren gardens designed to resemble the mythical gardens of Babylon as well as Cape Town’s original company gardens. Set with a citrus block, medicinal corner, chamomile lawn as well as a vegetable garden; this is one magical garden to get lost in. Rent a bike and make your way around or find a bench and read a book.
Now that is how you get your wellness on while on vacation in Cape Town!
